The Office of Civil Defense (OCD) Region IX, under the leadership of Regional Director Ramon M. Ochotorena, successfully held the 24th Gawad KALASAG National and Regional Awarding Ceremony last December 9, 2024, at The Pavilion Hall, Provincial Government Center.
The prestigious event was graced by Assistant Secretary Bernardo Rafaelito R. Alejandro IV, CESO IV, MNSA, the Civil Defense Deputy Administrator for Administration, who emphasized the importance of proactive disaster preparedness and resilience in his keynote address. His presence underscored the national governmentโ€™s commitment to recognizing local efforts that strengthen disaster risk reduction and management (DRRM) systems across the country.
A total of 54 Local Government Units (LGUs) from the Zamboanga Peninsula, represented by their Local Chief Executives/representatives and LDRRM Officers, were recognized for their exemplary performance in Disaster Risk Reduction and Management compliance and innovation. Among them are the 20 Beyond Compliant and 34 Fully Compliant Local Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Councils and Offices (LDRRMCOs), setting a benchmark of excellence for other LGUs to follow and proving their commitment to building safer and more resilient communities.
The ceremony was also attended by representatives of the Regional Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (RDRRMC) IX and the Regional Validation and Selection Committee. Member agencies such as DILG IX, DSWD IX, and DepEd IX played an integral role in the rigorous evaluation process that identified this yearโ€™s awardees. Their collaboration demonstrates the regionโ€™s united approach to disaster preparedness, response, and recovery.
The 2024 awarding ceremony marked a significant milestone for the the Municipality of San Miguel celebrating an impressive growth in DRRM compliance and excellence. This the first time that the Municipality of San Miguel qualified for the recognition. The Gawad KALASAG, or Kalamidad at Sakuna Labanan, Sariling Galing ang Kaligtasan, continues to serve as the countryโ€™s premier recognition for outstanding DRRM initiatives. This yearโ€™s ceremony in the Zamboanga Peninsula not only celebrated compliance and excellence but also inspired others to prioritize disaster resilience in their respective communities.
